[i]canadian_turtle: Doctor Who: The End of Time (picspam & review)

Mood: || Sad
Tune : "Time to Waltz" - Murray Gold

Say what you will but the Tenth Doctor's final two parter was epic. And heartbreaking. And while there were of course a few ridiculously written bits in the episodes overall the story was just fantastic. The last episode gave a proper closure to a lot of things and was I suppose a suiting ending for this very human version of the Doctor. I am not quite ready to let go of him just yet, which is probably why I spent the past day(s) writing my review for both parts of The End of Time (which actually turned into a picture and quote spam). It was nice rewatching the episodes a few times for that though.

Anyway, if you've seen both parts already have a look. And if you'd like discuss the episode please drop a comment as I'd love to talk about the The End of Time with fellow weeping fans. Anything to postpone the inevitable ending just a little longer, yeah? ♥

I didn't have time for a neat picture recap of 2009 (besides with all the travelling I've done last year I have too many pictures to pick from and it would be a near impossible job to narrow it all down) so instead I decided to summarise my year in some short lists:

FACTS

• I travelled to/through Australia, Japan, New Zealand & the US
• I went to 4 musicals (Billy Elliot, Cats, Starlight Express, Wicked)
• I read 43 books
• I watched 104 movies at home/in a plane
• I watched 17 movies in the cinema
• I watched 758 television episodes

FAVOURITES

• Books: Beastly by Alex Flinn, Necropolis by Anthony Horowitz, The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown & The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine
• Cities: Los Angeles, Wellington & Sydney
• Movies: Australia, Hamlet, Star Trek & The Fall
• People: David Tennant, John Simm, Lee Pace, Misha Collins, Zachary Levi & Zachary Quinto
• TV-shows: Chuck, Doctor Who, How I Met Your Mother, Supernatural & Torchwood: Children of Earth

HIGHLIGHTS

• Skydiving above the Fox Glacier in New Zealand (seriously: best thing ever!)
• The San Diego Comic Con (Meeting Zac Levi! Seeing David Tennant! Having the best time ever with my girls *is still flailing*)
• Snorkling above the Great Barrier Reef / Sailing across the Whitsunday Islands
• My 7 day road trip around Tasmania with Alina (even though sleeping in the car was cold!)
• Attending the Star Trek world premiere at the Sydney Opera House (meeting Zach Quinto again and Chris Pine)
• All the amazing things I've seen and done on my trips: from a glacier guide in New Zealand to going to Disneyland in both LA and Tokyo. But most of all the fantastic people I met up with during these travels. The awesome company is what made these experiences even more amazing and memorable, so thank you guys ♥

IN 2010 I WANT TO...

• Find a good (journalism) job, preferally something that has to do with travelling and enables me to use the English language for my work
• Get a place of my own (in the West of the country or London so I am closer to, well, everything)
• Frequent the theater more often
• Join *something* (a sport, a club, I don't know yet. Should be a lot easier once I have moved to a city though)
• Read a lot more again (and proper books at that, not just stuff that's laying around)

[i]canadian_turtle: Christmas recap

Mood: || Busy
Tune : John Barrowman - "O Holy Night"

Hope everyone had a few wonderful days eating too much and spending time with friends and family or just lazing around because of the free days from work :) Our Christmas turned out even quieter than expected. We had to cancel our plans as my dad got hit with both swine flu and pneumonia about a week ago and is still floored by it. He is hardly ever sick so when he does get something it hits him extra hard. This of course sucks badly for him and he's spent most of the past week in bed without any of the general Christmas fun and food. The rest of us pretty much spent Christmas in and around the house. Tried to entertain my little siblings with hanging out in the snow outside a few times (we had a white Christmas, kinda), playing games, watching some movies, etcetera. I also cooked and baked a bit more, which was fun, especially experimentang with some new things.

Of course I also got some great presents though not too much from my parents as we'd been spoiled already for Sinterklaas. Nonetheless I still got some awesome things:

• Guitar Hero 5 for the Wii (which is for everyone), cook book, bed linen, towels and some clothes (from my parents)
• Disney merch and the DVD set from the Sound Relief concerts (from Jules)
• Adorable Kiwiana and yummy New Zealand chocolate (from Parul)
• An awesome t-shirt with the Tardis on it and the text "You Never Forget your First Doctor" (from Sean and Julie)

As the BBC turned this Christmas into one revolving around David Tennant I tuned in quite often for that as well to catch everything he was in (and I could not get enough of the DW Christmas idents they kept showing around his programs, they're so cool <3). Here's a few quick comments on the major shows:

Doctor Who: The End of Time 1: I've read very diverse opinions on this episode but I personally loved it. I won't go into detail now, but I'll make a proper reaction after part 2 has aired this week. Though I will say that the cafe scene was my favourite one of the episode <\3

Catherine Tate: Nan's Christmas Special: Overall quite a disappointment. Mostly boring and the Nan character was annoying to watch. The David bits however were hilarious, omg! I will never look at the ghost of Christmas Present the same way again. Seriously, his Russell Brand look combined with the Ghostbuster dance scene, the exaggerated Scottish accent and the skinny jeans were the best thing ever. I am tempted to picspam his scenes. Risotto! Risotto! Risotto!

Hamlet (the RSC version on BBC): First of all I am glad it felt more like a stage production than a made for TV movie. Loved David as Hamlet (no surprise there though, I am sure); the emotional scenes, the wacky ones, everything. Patrick Stewart's Claudius was a bit disappointing, I didn't believe that he even cared for Gertrude. Though I suppose part of the reason I didn't enjoy his performance was also because of my dislike for Claudius. Ophelia was only really great in her last few scenes. Laertus on the other hand: fantastic! And of course Horatio ♥ Why did I have to be all the way in Australia when they performed the play on stage? I now even more regret not having seen it :( Barrowman! *shakes fist*

[i]canadian_turtle: Happy Holidays!

Mood: || Rushed
Tune : n/a

What is everyone doing tonight/tomorrow? I'll be celebrating the holidays with my family, which is lovely as I was all the way on the other side of the world last year. We won't do anything spectacular, just cook/bake a lot (already made cookies and chocolate pudding today), watch Christmas movies and generally spend more time together which is always a good thing. And of course there is a new Doctor Who episode on TV as well as Hamlet (which, according to a Dutch TV-guide, stars some bloke called Danny Tennant... lol), for which I am super excited :D

Anyway, regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas or not I hope each and every one of you has a few wonderful days *squishes* ♥
